Nebraska's capital city, Lincoln is home to a rich culture steeped in history dating back to 1856 when it was founded as Lancaster. After the conclusion of the Civil War, Lancaster was renamed Lincoln in honor of the recently assassinated president.

Lincoln is part of the Lincoln Metropolitan and Lincoln-Beatrice Combined Statistical Areas, which have a population of nearly 350,000. With an urban population of over 280,000, Lincoln is the second most populous city in Nebraska.

The Nebraska state government and the federal government are among the major employers in Lincoln. Lincoln is home to the University of Nebraska, founded in 1867 and the third largest employer in the city today. Lincoln is also known for its growing high-tech sector and is part of the Midwest's Silicon Prairie.

Lincoln is served by Lincoln Public Schools, the second largest public school district in Nebraska. The district has an enrollment of over 40,000 students in more than 60 schools and academic programs.

Lincoln is a major hub for arts and culture and sports. Memorial Stadium at University of Nebraska–Lincoln is home to the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. Major venues for live music include the Pinnacle Bank Arena and Bourbon Theatre. Music and theatre lovers flock to the Lied Center, which hosts the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra as well as national tours of Broadway shows. Live theatre is staged at the Haymarket Theatre, Lincoln Community Playhouse, and the Loft at the Mill. Lincoln also has a thriving art gallery scene.

Over 125 parks and a 133-mile system of trails make up Lincoln's park system. One of the popular recreational trails is the MoPac Trail, used for bicycling, horseback riding, running, and walking.
